Course Description

When it comes to complex trauma and dissociation, EMDR, ‘Parts’ Models and Attachment interventions work better in collaboration than they do alone. This training illuminates why and demonstrates how to combine interventions from multiple sources to enhance the effectiveness of EMDR with complex cases.
We will visit and move beyond any one treatment modality to focus on the ways in which trauma-informed therapies overlap, inform/support one another, and illuminate a bigger picture. Participants will decode persistent, seemingly intractable symptoms and be able to apply effective interventions that work across the trauma-related diagnostic spectrum.

Included are EMDR, Structural Dissociation, Parts Work (e.g., Internal Family Systems), and Attachment theory.

Learning Objectives

    1. Identify ‘dissociation’, the spectrum of dissociation, and corresponding diagnosis’.
    2. Recognize the relevance of dissociation to trauma processing (i.e., EMDR).
    3. Identify 1 EMDR Modified Protocol for working effectively with dissociation.
    4. Summarize the diagnostic indicators of Secondary and Tertiary dissociation.
    5. Identify when in treatment (i.e., in which phase) to use parts model interventions such as Internal Family Systems parts work.
    6. Identify the source of dissociation and corresponding ‘goals of treatment’.
    7. Recognize the definition of ‘Structural Dissociation’.
    8. Identify 2 key terms of Structural Dissociation and explain how the theory defines dissociation.
    9. Explain how clinically significant dissociation develops and is maintained within a Structural Dissociation framework.
    10. Define concepts, specify goals, and explain specific integrative interventions in the treatment of Secondary and Tertiary Dissociation.
    11. Recognize integrative, phase-oriented treatment in Complex PTSD cases.
    12. Identify Victim-Rescuer-Perpetrator dynamic in abuse/neglect survivors as well as treatment strategies and goals.
    13. Recognize the role of parts models such as Internal Family Systems, in stabilization.
    14. Recognize parts model interventions (e.g., Internal Family Systems), Metacognitive skill-building, and Attachment Repair interventions needed for a full and complete treatment of Secondary and Tertiary Dissociation.
    15. Recognize the role of attachment disruption in the development of dis-regulation and dissociation.
    16. Recognize the role of enhancing metacognitive skills in the treatment of dis-regulation and dissociation.
