Trauma Informed Lens For Educators
What Does It Take to Develop Resiliency In Students
Trauma, maltreatment, and neglect of children and youth have a profound effect on their social, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and academic development. For traumatized students to function optimally in school, educators must be able to, 1) recognize the symptoms of maltreatment and neglect and 2) know how to interact with those symptoms effectively. In this webinar you will learn to do both!
Specifically designed for educators, this course translates high level trauma-informed care into practical strategies and interventions for use in the classroom. The content (including lecture, slides and a detailed ‘how to’ handout) provides a roadmap for teachers, administrators, and school support staff alike to take an active role in strengthening the neurobiological resilience of all students - a profoundly hopeful and necessary ingredient for learning.
Introduction by Dr. Mary Ruth Coleman, Senior Scientist Emeritus at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has numerous publications including, “Educating Exceptional Children, 15th” (with the late Samuel A. Kirk and James J. Gallagher) and “Implementing RtI with Gifted Students” with Susan Johnsen. She served three terms (9 years) on the Board of National Association for Gifted Children; two terms (6 years) on the Board of the Council for Exceptional Children; and was president of the CEC in 2007. Rachel Walker created this course with input from Anneli Richards, MA, LMFT, a trauma-informed therapst specializing in the treatment of children and families. Anneli spent the early part of her 21-year career working with emotionally disturbed youth in the foster care system and treatment centers, and then moved into the public school system where she worked for 12 years treating children in school settings, partnering with teachers and school administrators. In 2015 Anneli founded Family Matters of Marin, a private group practice focused on trauma-informed care for youth in the context of their families.
